ROY AYERS RETURNS TO MELBOURNE IN 2017

Vibraphonist and vocalist Roy Ayers is known as the Godfather of Neo-Soul and is among the most respected jazz and R&B artists on the scene today.

Ayers was born in Los Angeles, California on September 10, 1940. Music has always been in his genes; his mother Ruby, was a schoolteacher and local piano instructor and his father, Roy Sr. was a sometimes-parking attendant and trombonist. As it often happens in a household filled with love and appreciation for music, Roy began to demonstrate his musical aptitude by the tender age of five. By then he was playing boogie tunes on the piano. He eventually turned his attention to the guitar and other instruments, including the trumpet, and drums before embracing instrument of choice, the vibraphone.

In the 1960’s, Roy was an award-winning jazz vibraphonist but soon transferred into a popular R&B band leader in the 1970’s and 80’s. Today, the dynamic music man is an iconic figure still in great demand. His career has been diverse and impressive, he created an influential soundtrack for the 1973 Blaxploitation film Coffy, performed on Whitney Houston’s hit song ‘Love Will Save the Day’ in 1988 and is one of the most sampled artists in R&B and Hip Hop, featuring on hits by Common, Mary J. Blige, Dr Dre and DÁngelo to name a few.

Don’t miss this true giant of Acid Jazz as he visits Melbourne with a sideshow at The Croxton before Bluesfest in Byron Bay this April!

“The Unseen” A Detroit Beat Tape – Film Screening

The Unseen-A3-FA -

Following on from our screening of ”All Ears” we are screening the brand new documentary by the same film maker Gus Sutherland, “The Unseen” A Detroit Beat Tape!

Info

The Unseen explores the soul and roots of Detroit Hip Hop Production, mirroring the sketchpad style format of a beat tape. Loosely acting as a prequel to the L.A. based “All Ears” documentary,

The Unseen provides rare insights into a scene that has remained distant from the public eye while giving birth to some of the culture’s richest and most influential sounds. The film glimpses the hidden and elusive characteristics inherent in a city often depicted in a one dimensional light.

-Screening 1 will commence at 6:30 Monday 12th December  book here                                                               -Screening 2 will commence at 6:30 Tuesday 13th December  book here

HOUSE SHOES & WAX MUSEUM PRESENT “ALL EARS” DOCUMENTARY SCREENING

all_ears

House shoes has kindly organised a screening of “ALL EARS” a documentary focused on the LA beat scene! This will be the first public screening of the film in Australia and possibly the last.

Film info

All Ears is a documentary focusing on the famous Beat scene of Los Angeles. The L.A. community behind Low End Theory is often cited as origin of a now worldwide movement, and All Ears offers an insight into the minds of some of the producers responsible for the thriving scene (dak, Ras G, Sacred, Kutmah, Dibia$e, House Shoes, DJ Nobody & many more). Looking at the network of record labels, collectives and events that have formed a united community that is continuing to grow and diversify by the day, the documentary also reflects upon the great impact of the scene’s two most notable figures, Madlib and the late J Dilla.

Tickets are extremely limited due to the size of the venue. There will be 2 screenings,  Wed 28th and Thurs 29th September with 20 tickets available for each. The Wednesday 28th screening will include a Q&A with House shoes and the Thursday 29th screening will include an introduction and meet & greet with House shoes.

Buy Tickets here for Wednesday 28th screening and here for Thursday 29th screening
